Intelligent Transport Systems and Services Innovation Platform
What is an Innovation Platform?
Innovation Platforms are designed to address major society and public policy challenges and where a government department is taking specific action through policy, regulation, procurement or financial measures to tackle the problem.
What will the Intelligent Transport Systems and Services Innovation Platform do?
The Intelligent Transport Systems and Services Innovation Platform will
- identify and address the gaps in the UK’s current use of available technologies and services
- analyse human behaviours and attitudes in this context, and find how to influence people’s decision-making by providing them with the appropriate tools and information
- help UK businesses develop innovative products and services in response to new market opportunities that may result from government interventions in transport.
Expected benefits
Economic
- A 5% reduction in travel time on the roads could save businesses around £2.5bn which is 0.2% of GDP.
- Eliminating existing road congestion would be worth £7-8bn each year.
- If left unchecked, the rising cost of congestion will waste an extra £22bn worth of time in England alone by 2025.
Climate change
- Transport contributes about a quarter of the UK’s CO2 emissions, so a reduction in carbon from transport will make a big contribution to overall carbon reduction in the UK.
Society
- People will benefit from reduced delays and better reliability on the transport network.
