Andrew Bloodworth, Head of Science - Minerals and Waste, British Geological Survey.
Andrew is responsible for British Geological Survey research related to mineral and metal resource security, the environmental legacy of past mining and the future safe geological disposal of radioactive waste.
His own interests include raw material security, regulatory issues associated with minerals extraction and the impact of mining on the developing world. In 2009 he was an expert contributor to the Government Office for Science Foresight Project on ‘Land-Use Futures’ and recently chaired the UK Mineral Forum’s Working Groups on both Security of Supply and Mineral Extraction in National Parks. He teaches a course on the 'Socio-economics and politics of mining' at Camborne School of Mines (University of Exeter).
In addition to having experience of the UK minerals sector, he has also worked extensively in Africa and was formerly the Mining Advisor to the UK Department for International Development with a particular interest in the development impacts of small-scale and artisanal mining. Prior to that, he worked on a wide variety of projects related to minerals as a path to poverty reduction in the developing world and to mineralogical research related to radioactive waste disposal.
Andrew is a Chartered Geologist, an Associate Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and a council member of the Mineral Industries Research Organisation.
