Dale Southerton
Bio

Dale Southerton is Professor of Sociology at Manchester University. He is also Director of the Economic and Social Research Council co-funded Sustainable Practices Research Group and a Professorial Fellow of the Sustainable Consumption Institute (also at Manchester University), where he leads research on modelling consumer behaviour. He has conducted a number of research projects on consumption and everyday life, including ‘The Diffusion of Cultures of Consumption: A Comparative Analysis’ (funded through the Economic and Social Research Council/Arts and Humanities Research Council Cultures of Consumption Research Programme), ‘Sustainable Domestic Technologies’ and projects on consumption and time.

He has published extensively about consumption and consumer culture, with particular reference to: time pressure and temporalities; sustainability; everyday life; identity and lifestyles; theories of social change; and technologies, innovation and material culture. Publications include ‘Sustainable Consumption: The Implications of Changing Infrastructures of Provision’ (2004) and (as Editor) ‘The Encyclopedia of Consumer Culture’ (Sage, 2011).
